The ACT Children's Plan articulates the government's commitment to children and families, to provide a common policy framework for the provision of services and to set guidelines for the practical implementation of services across government, non-government agencies and the community.

ACT Community Directory

The ACT Community Directory, managed by Volunteering and Contact ACT has over 2,200 community listings for the Canberra region. These listings comprise of community organisations, hobbies, sports and interests groups.

ACT Human Rights Commission

ACT Human Rights Commission

The ACT Human Rights Commission promotes the human rights and welfare of people living in the ACT and provides an independent, fair and accessible one-stop shop for complaints of unlawful discrimination and complaints regarding health services and services for children, youth, older people and the disabled.

ACT Office for Ageing

Community Services Directorate

The ACT Office for Ageing provides the ACT Government with policy advice on positive ageing and it administers funding for positive ageing initiatives such as the ACT Seniors Card and the Life’s Reflections Photographic Competition.

A Gender Agenda

The A Gender Agenda website is a community hub and informational resource for transgender, intersex and other gender variant people and their supporters. The organisation provide information and support for individuals, families, government bodies and other institutions.

Canberra Men's Centre

Non-Government

The Canberra Men's Centre provides an Information and Referral Service for men living in the ACT and region. Services include counselling, access to supported accommodation and other community services, referrals, peer support groups and assistance with literacy or language barriers to fill in forms. A meeting room with TV, DVD and electronic white board is available for use by private and community groups.

Carers ACT

Non-Government

Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail-aged. Carers ACT deliver carer services and support including: information and advice, counseling, respite, support groups, educational and social activities.

Department of Veterans' Affairs

Federal Government

The Department of Veterans' Affairs supports war veterans, war widow/ers, serving and former defence force members, eligible AFP members and eligible dependents and carers through compensation and income support, access to health care and rehabilitation services and transition support emphasising wellness and self sufficiency.

Disability ACT

Community Services Directorate

The role and responsibility of Disability ACT is to plan, develop strategic policy, allocate funding and provide and monitor services for people with disability in the ACT and the families that care for them.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Community Information

The AIDS Action Council provides links to support groups, online groups, health services and human rights information for the GLBTI community.

Multicultural Youth Services

Multicultural Youth Services provides free and confidential assistance to young migrants around a number of topics including accommodation, employment, education, training and family issues. The service also runs social, recreational and community development projects.

It also provide a source of up to date data for planning, referral and research. My Community Directory is brought to you by CONACT Canberra (formerly the Citizens Advice Bureau).

National Translating and Interpreting Service

The Australian Government provides a Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) for people who do not speak English and for English speakers needing to communicate with non-English speaking persons.

Office for Children, Youth and Family Support

Community Services Directorate

The Office for Children, Youth and Family Support works in partnership with the community to provide care and protection services to children and young people, and family and community support to meet the needs of the people of Canberra. In addition, the Office is responsible for youth justice services, adoptions and the monitoring and licensing of children's services.

Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

The Office provides strategic advice to the Chief Minister on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. The Office coordinates a whole-of-government approach to issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents and provides secretariat and administrative support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Consultative Council and the United Ngunnawal Elders Council.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs provides strategic advice to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs on issues affecting people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Public Advocate of the ACT

Public Advocate of the ACT

The role of the Public Advocate of the ACT (PA ACT) is to protect and promote the rights and interests of our vulnerable citizens in partnership with the ACT community. The functions of the PA ACT include:

  • Advocating for the rights and freedoms of vulnerable persons in our community;
  • Fostering the provision of services and facilities to vulnerable persons in our community;
  • Supporting the establishment and encouraging the development of programs that benefit vulnerable persons in our community;
  • Acting a ‘Guardian of Last Resort’ or ‘Emergency Guardian’ to vulnerable persons in the community where no other persons is found suitable or available; and
  • Representing or supporting vulnerable persons in our community in matters before the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal or a Court.

Public Trustee and Guardian

Public Trustee and Guardian

Public Trustee and Guardian provides permanent and secure Trustee and Administration services to the ACT Community.

Services include -

  • will-making (where the Public Trustee is appointed executor);
  • administering deceased estates under will or in intestacy;
  • asset services under Enduring Power of Attorney;
  • trustee for trusts created in Wills, Deeds and Court Orders for families, infants and people with disabilities;
  • acting as agent for the Territory to receive, manage and dispose of assets forfeited under the Confiscation of Criminal Assets Act 2003;
  • administer moneys declared unclaimed under the Unclaimed Money Act 1950, Legal Practitioners Act 2006 andAgents Act 2003, including receiving moneys, processing claims and investing funds;
  • investing moneys held in specified government trust funds;
  • acting for people with disabilities where ordered by a Court;
  • providing an annual examination of the accounts maintained by external managers on behalf of people with impaired decision-making ability; and
  • act as administrator for the ACT Official Visitor Scheme and Chair the Official Visitors Board.

Volunteering ACT is the peak body for volunteering in the ACT region and represents the interests of all community volunteers and those who work with volunteers. Youth Coalition of the ACT

The Youth Coalition is the peak youth affairs body in the Australian Capital Territory and is responsible for representing the interests of people aged between 12 and 25 years of age, and those who work with them. The Youth Coalition is represented on many ACT Government Advisory structures and provides advice to the ACT Government on youth issues as well as providing information to youth services about policy and program matters.

Youth InterACT aims to encourage 12-25 year olds from a range of backgrounds and experiences to have their say about youth issues in Canberra. The website also offers a directory of services for Youth in the ACT.
