Enlighten 2021 Artist Brief

Canberra’s annual Enlighten Festival is a two-week celebration of culture and creativity.

With events occurring across Canberra, the City Renewal Authority want to shine a spotlight on Canberra City’s most iconic landmarks.

Daring artists are charged with developing a creative concept and artwork that will communicate the Enlighten experience, complement the qualities of the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings and create a sense of wonder and joy for the Northbourne gateway, driving public enthusiasm and interest for the 2021 event and beyond. The successful artist/s work will be presented as a static projection.

Outline:

Based on our design-led people first philosophy we are seeking to engage up to two artists to develop two works each for the City Renewal Authority’s Enlighten program. The creative response should deliver immediate visual impact which tells a story and captures a new perspective of the city centre. The artists will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality artworks (with assistance from The Electric Canvas, the technical projection partner) to enhance these iconic Canberra landmarks.

Brief:

For the design of the artwork, we challenge the artists to present works that illustrate what makes our city centre special. The completed works should speak to the heart and soul of our city. The artworks should welcome people to come together if not in person, at least in spirit, and offer an experience that sparks conversation, celebration, hope and civic pride, and respond to themes of inclusiveness, thankfulness, care, hopefulness and joy. The artwork should act as a magnification of all things good about our city, its people and its place.

Ideally, we’re looking for a bespoke work, however we’re also open to discussion about existing artwork being used.
