Welcome to the Woolley St Project - creating a vibrant community in Dickson

Woolley Street in Dickson is well known locally for being family friendly, multi-cultural and having a mix of great inexpensive food. However, after years of neglect and changing public expectations of how an eat street could be experienced, Woolley Street has been identified as needing a major streetscape upgrade.

Grounded in place-based principles, the City Renewal Authority has chosen to trial potential changes to transform the street and measure public opinion as part of the Woolley St. Project.

The Woolley St. Project will test a series of public realm interventions to give people a firsthand experience of how an improved Woolley Street could look and feel.

For 8 weeks, starting at the end of September, Woolley Street will be the focus of activations including changes to the streetscape, installation of additional street furniture, and testing alternative traffic conditions and parking. The activations will also include a series of events designed to attract more visitors to the area, encouraging them to explore and engage with local businesses.

The goal is to:

Project team

The City Renewal Authority is working in conjunction with a range of contributing partners to promote, activate and run the program, including: Complete Constructions Australia, Place Laboratory, Sweet Potato, Threesides Marketing, Show Pony Events and NS Group.

In developing and delivering the program, this committed project team draws on the expertise and support of a knowledgeable community coalition, the City Renewal Authority and the wider ACT Government.

Program structure

As part of the project, the City Renewal Authority will be facilitating various street infrastructure improvements, road closures and events throughout September to November 2019.

The program can be loosely grouped into two phases.

Phase 1 (2 Sept – 19 September)

In this phase, the project team will be constructing and installing larger-scale infrastructure elements such as a large gateway entry sign placed at the start of Woolley St, short-stay parklets, a temporary events pavilion and long alfresco dining area for public use, and other interactive installations and events that aim to inspire Canberrans to discover, eat, play and contribute to an undeniably ‘Diverse Dickson’.

Phase 2 – Stage 1 (21 September – 11 October)

During this phase, the largescale infrastructure works will be complete for the community to enjoy. This includes the large gateway, temporary pavilions, long alfresco dining area and short-stay parklets.

Phase 2 – Stage 2 (12 October – 11 November)

This phase continues to build upon the work commenced in Phase 2 – Stage 1, with further changes occurring to the streetscape and a number of community events taking place as we move into Canberra’s warmer months.

A range of interventions will be tested over the eight weeks. Find out what these involve here.
