Featuring large timber picnic tables and brightly coloured umbrellas, the Pic & Mix pop-up urban picnic is reinvigorating Canberra's city centre.

Currently situated in City Walk after stops in Garema Place, Civic Square and Glebe Park, the pop-up urban picnic area continues to grow in popularity as a destination to meet friends, have lunch or relax in the shade.

The Pic & Mix is breathing life into areas of Canberra that have primarily been used as transit corridors.

Pic & Mix in City Walk

4 January 2018

The Pic & Mix Urban Picnic is now brightening up City Walk after popular stops in Garema Place, Civic Square and Glebe Park.

The picnic tables and their colourful umbrellas will be next to the Canberra Times Fountain in City Walk until the National Multicultural Festival in mid-February.

As usual, the tables are for members of the public to spend time and enjoy the City Renewal Precinct.

People can pack their own food, or buy from one of the city's great cafes or restaurants, and bring it to the pop-up picnic area to meet friends or just enjoy the city's vibrancy.

The Pic & Mix is in an alcohol-free area and the existing rules about alcohol in the area remain.

The City Renewal Authority would love to hear suggestions about future location and uses for the pop-up picnic within the City Renewal Precinct. Email cityrenewal@act.gov.au or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to leave suggestions.

Pic & Mix in the park

1 December 2017

The Pic & Mix Urban Picnic has moved to Glebe Park after a successful short stint in Civic Square.

The picnic tables and their colourful umbrellas will call Glebe Park home for the rest of December before finding a new temporary home early next year.

With Christmas in Glebe Park starting next week (Friday 8 December) and running up until Christmas their will be plenty of reasons to make the most out of this fantastic urban park.

Pack your own food and drink, or buy food from Christmas in Glebe Park, or one of the city's great cafes or restaurants, and bring them to the pop-up picnic area. Alcoholic drinks bought from the licensed area at Christmas in Glebe Park will not be able to be taken out to the picnic tables.

Dine out in Garema Place at the Pic and Mix pop-up picnic area

25 October 2017

Garema Place will be an even more attractive lunch and dinner option for the next few weeks with the installation of 18 temporary picnic tables and umbrellas.

The City Renewal Authority’s Pic and Mix pop-up picnic area will feature large timber tables and colourful umbrellas for use by the community throughout the day and night. Picnickers will be able to use the tables to mix with friends, socialise with colleagues or simply enjoy the activity of Garema Place.

City Renewal Authority acting chief executive Nicholas Holt said the Pic and Mix area, which will be moved to different locations in the City Renewal Precinct, offers the community a chance to enjoy some of our city’s great public spaces from a new perspective.

“The tables are not tied to any single business so they are available to use no matter where you have purchased your food,” Mr Holt said.

“Whether you have take-away from one of the local businesses or have brought something from home, the Pic and Mix is a great opportunity to use the space to enjoy this important part of our city.

“The area will be an alcohol-free zone most of the time, except during special events run by some of the nearby businesses, when they will take out a liquor permit over the area and have a mobile bar on site.”

Several local businesses have already agreed to hold special events during the pop-up picnic area’s short stay in Garema Place and the option is still available for other local businesses to get involved.

“The City Renewal Authority is really looking forward to seeing how this public activation experiment works in further activating Garema Place,” Mr Holt said.

“The way in which businesses and the community engage with this initial Pic and Mix will help determine how and where the pop-up urban picnic will be used around the precinct in the future.”

The Pic and Mix picnic area will be in Garema Place from today until 20 November.

The City Renewal Authority is working with Garema Place businesses but is always keen to hear new ideas for activating this fun new community space via our email at cityrenewal@act.gov.au, online or through social media.
