This page has information for registered pharmacists on applying for an opioid dependency treatment licence to dispense methadone, buprenorphine or buprenorphine/naloxone for the treatment of drug dependency.

Licence conditions

You must be a registered pharmacist.

You must make sure that the person the buprenorphine or methadone is administered to signs a written or electronic form to acknowledge:

  • the approved name and brand of medicine administered
  • the form, strength and quantity of medicine administered
  • the date the medicine is administered
  • that the medicine has been administered to that person.

Buprenorphine and methadone must be obtained on a complying purchase order.

Dispensing methadone, buprenorphine or buprenorphine or buprenorphine/naloxone must be in line with the National Guidelines for Medication Assisted Treatment of Opioid Dependence.

Dispensing of these medicines should comply with Opioid Maintenance Treatment in the ACT: Local Policies and Procedures.

You must complete training for the safe administration and dispensing of opioid maintenance treatment as outlined in the ACT Legislation Register.
