Cooling tower systems are regulated under the Public Health Act 1997 to minimise potential risks to public health, primarily from exposure to Legionella bacteria.

Registrations are issued to the owner of the system. Owners are responsible for the system and for its compliance with the Act.

Code of practice

Cooling tower systems are required to be operated in accordance with The Cooling Towers, Evaporative Condensers and Warm Water Storage Systems (Specialised Systems) Code of Practice 2005. This code of practice provides a framework for reporting and managing cooling tower systems and warm water storage systems in the ACT.
