Choose Healthier pilot project
The Choose Healthier pilot project was developed to show the important role local businesses can play in addressing the high rates of overweight and obesity in the ACT, by making healthier food and drink choices more readily available and easier to identify.
The three-month pilot, which ran until July 2016, was delivered in partnership with the Canberra Business Chamber and the ACT Nutrition Support Service. The pilot aimed to trial actions to improve the range of healthier choices available across a variety of Canberra businesses.
The five businesses that participated in the pilot were the Hellenic Club in Woden, Limelight Cinema in Tuggeranong, Tommy & Me Cafe in Macgregor and the IGA supermarkets at Nicholls and Kambah (Drakeford).
During the pilot, the ACT Nutrition Support Service (managed by Nutrition Australia ACT) worked with each of the businesses to develop a diverse range of healthier options for their respective customers. The Canberra Business Chamber then worked with each of the businesses to develop innovative strategies to market and deliver these choices to consumers.
Following the pilot a case study for each business was developed to highlight the findings and the healthier choices implemented by each business.

Overall, the pilot showed that consumers want choice in the form of readily available, competitively priced healthier food and drink options. It also showed that businesses can successfully introduce healthier options without damaging their bottom line.
The Choose Healthier pilot project forms part of the ACT Government's Healthy Weight Initiative, supporting a healthy, active and productive community.
