Building light rail to Woden will have an impact on traffic flows, public transport and active travel routes to and from the city.

This is expected to lead to increased travel times from Canberra’s southside, as well as flow-on impacts across the wider transport network. This disruption will commence from around mid-2022 as major works get under way on raising London Circuit to create an at-grade intersection with Commonwealth Avenue.

The ACT Government is working with commuters, employers, local business and other stakeholders to put in place the right plans to mitigate traffic disruption through up to four years of construction ahead.

Predicted Impacts

The delivery of light rail to Woden will coincide with major works by the National Capital Authority to strengthen Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, and several large private development projects around the City West construction zone. Together, these projects will see an unprecedented level of construction activity happening in the city over the next few years.

The construction of light rail will be very disruptive for our road network, with lane closures and diversions in place for several years on major approach routes into the city from the south and west. This is expected to lead to longer commutes on key routes like Commonwealth Avenue, Kings Avenue and Parkes Way.

The ACT Government will be communicating early and often about what’s changing across the road network, to help Canberrans find the right alternative transport options to avoid long commutes and traffic jams.
