Good progress being made on accommodation for mothers and babies
An expansion of Karinya House is on track for its completion in July. Karinya House has long provided a wonderful service for pregnant women and new mothers who are experiencing challenges in their lives.
The ACT Government recognised the need for Karinya House to expand and is investing $4.45 million so that this service can support more women in Canberra.
Karinya House currently operates from two properties in Belconnen. The ACT Government is developing new purpose-built facilities, also in Belconnen, that will allow the service to consolidate and provide improved services to the community.
The new site will include an administration building, a four-bedroom supported accommodation unit and seven, separate two-bedroom accommodation units.
Among the new features that will be provided at the new premises is a dedicated mother and baby unit to support mothers whose babies may be at risk of entering care.
Karinya House is an important part of the ACT Government’s A Step Up for Our Kids, in particular its focus on keeping families together where possible.
By providing support to families who need help and support to parent safely before they reach crisis point, we hope to keep more families together and see fewer children entering care.
