Local organisations shortlisted for Kingston Arts Precinct
Three local developers are on the shortlist for the Kingston Arts Precinct, a renewal project that will transform the five-hectare site near the Canberra Glassworks into Canberra’s creative arts hub.
The shortlisted proponents will now develop their concepts into detailed plans. They are Doma Group, Englobo Group and Geocon/Fender Katsalidis/Oculus, who have each formed partnerships with renowned planners, architects and other consultants for the project.
The precinct will become a key cultural destination, bringing together the city’s heritage with a new development that will be Canberra’s creative hub. It will be a place where artists, cultural organisations and creative businesses make, teach, exhibit, perform and sell their work.
The request for proposal specified the needs of the arts organisations that will operate in the precinct. These include gallery, workshop, meeting and administration spaces, accommodation for visiting artists and car parking.
Development conditions include delivering the project within ten years with minimum disruption to existing precinct activities, surrounding businesses and residents.
The preferred developer will be announced later this year and work could begin in 2017.
