Planning changes encourage alternatives to the car
Twelve percent of ACT adults travel less than 5km to work or study and a further 18% between 5 and 10km. Despite this only about 3% of us ride a bike to work each day.
By improving end-of-trip facilities with things like secure bike parking and change rooms at workplaces, we want to encourage active, healthy and low cost commuting.
In planning changes currently out for public comment, the existing bicycle parking code in the Territory Plan will be replaced with a new code that will require the construction of end-of-trip facilities for new buildings and major alterations.
As an incentive to build end-of-trip facilities, under the proposed new rules these facilities will no longer be counted as part of gross floor area calculations of new and refurbished buildings.
