Prescribed burns commence across Canberra

Firefighters back burning grasslands. Firefighters back burning grasslands.

Prescribed burns have begun today, (Wednesday 10 April) across the ACT to reduce fire risk, assist in property protection and help protect our environment.

Weather permitting, prescribed burns will begin at Aranda Bushland tomorrow (Thursday 11 April), with burns continuing at Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Operations at Namadgi National Park are expected to last between 4-6 days with smoke expected to linger for up to several weeks once the burn is complete.

People with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke. People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

A map showing the location of all burn sites is available at environment.gov.au.
