Use your wood heater the right way

A mother and daughter at night sitting by a wood fire in a home. It is important to only use dry, well-seasoned, untreated wood in your wood heater.

Did you know smoke from wood heaters is the largest source of air pollution in the ACT?

Thankfully it’s not hard to use your wood heater the right way to improve air quality, save money and keep your home warm.

Here are some steps to getting the most from your wood heater:

  • buy wood from an authorised firewood merchant and store it in a well ventilated covered space
  • do not overfill your heater - use two or three small logs, never one large log
  • only use dry, well-seasoned, untreated wood
  • don’t let your fire smoulder overnight - keep the air control open enough to maintain a flame.
