Weston Creek Walk-in Centre now open
Canberra’s newest nurse-led Walk-in Centre is now open within the existing Community Health Centre next to Cooleman Court at Weston.
Its arrival takes the number of Walk-in Centres across the city to four, with the existing Tuggeranong, Gungahlin and Belconnen sites also co-located with Community Health Centres. A fifth centre will open in Dickson in 2020.
Walk-in Centres provide FREE health care for minor injuries and illnesses. They are open every day from 7.30 am to 10.00 pm, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. No appointment is needed.
The centres are led by a team of highly skilled advanced practice nurses and nurse practitioners with extensive experience in treating people with minor injuries and illnesses. There are no doctors at the clinics.
The staff provide free advice and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries including cold, flu, ear infections, sinusitis, tonsilitis, mild gastroenteritis, mastitis, conjunctivitis, cuts, bruises, abrasions, burns, strains, sprains, skin conditions, dental abscess, rashes and minor infections and wounds.
They also offer the following health services:
- removal of stitches and staples
- wound dressings
- tetanus injections
- x-ray referral for injuries below the knee and shoulder
- plastering/splinting for simple limb injuries
- emergency contraception
- ear wax removal
- chlamydia screening
- blood glucose test
- sick and carers certificates (not medical certificates) – see the Walk-in Centre frequently asked questions page for the difference between a sick certificate and a medical certificate.
They do not provide treatment for children under 2 years or age or for complex or chronic ongoing health conditions. They don’t refill prescriptions, and they don’t provide treatment following a motor vehicle accident or following an injury at work (due to worker’s compensation requirements).
The Weston Creek Walk-in Centre is at 24 Parkinson Street, Weston, and like the centres at Tuggeranong, Gungahlin and Belconnen, is open every day, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, from 7.30am to 10pm.
