Tie-up your shoes, put on your helmet and grab your bike, a new cycleway is coming to Belconnen this year!

The new 4.7-kilometre bikeway will improve accessibility, provide safer and faster commutes and deliver more opportunities for weekend recreation. It will include both shared and separated cycling and pedestrian facilities.

It is really important to exercise each day, particularly during the current COVID-19 situation. Bike-riding provides the perfect opportunity to get outside in the fresh air, strengthen bones, increase cardiovascular fitness, improve muscle strength and reduce stress levels.

While the Belconnen bike path is still under construction, Canberra has an extensive network of shared paths and bike routes that the community can make use of in the meantime. There are cycling and walking maps and a journey planner available online.

Work on the new Belconnen Bikeway began in October 2019 and as of this month, 2.5 kilometres of asphalt has already been laid.

The new bikeway will deliver a route that makes it easier for people to access the Belconnen Town Centre, providing better links to the surrounding suburbs. It will benefit both commuters and locals who love getting active.

It will start on Coulter Drive in Florey and continue along the old busway on Joynton Smith Drive to the Belconnen Town Centre, continuing along Emu Bank through to the University of Canberra and onto Haydon Drive via College Street.

The new cycleway will include: 1400 metres of shared path, 1475 metres of pedestrian only path, 2141 metres of cyclist only path and 440 metre on-road cycleway through the old busway on Joynton Smith Drive. 200 trees and approximately 4000 shrubs will also be planted along the route.

You can take a look at the final designs here.

Whilst construction of the Belconnen Bikeway is coming along nicely, it is important to remember that it is a live construction zone and not yet safe to ride on. Canberrans are more than welcome to take full advantage of the new Belconnen bikeway once it is safe to do so.
