Pooch at play

Pooches young and old can expect more grass, more trees and a healthier environment at the Weston Creek and Tuggeranong dog parks.

The pooch population of Canberra are being pampered with upgrades to popular dog parks and the Domestic Animal Services shelter.

The Weston Creek and Tuggeranong dog parks will receive $200,000 for more grass for dogs to exercise on, more native trees for natural shade, and new irrigation systems.

The improvements are in addition to $200,000 worth of upgrades to dog parks already undertaken this year, which includes new community noticeboards at all parks, improved irrigation at the Belconnen and Forde parks, a new shade sail and additional seating at the Weston Creek park, and improved stormwater usage at the Yarralumla park.

The improved dog parks complement a range of upgrades which are currently underway at the Domestic Animal Services (DAS) shelter in Symonston.

The Domestic Animal Services shelter now has new veterinary and food preparation areas, paths, gardens, gates, benches and a new shopfront for Canberrans to make the life changing decision to provide a forever home for a dog in need.

Approximately $1.9 million worth of upgrades, which include various 'screwdriver-ready' stimulus works, will enhance the shelter’s facilities for better wellbeing for animals and improved safety for staff members.

Included in the upgrades are 12 dangerous dog kennels, which will improve the safety of staff members by minimising direct interaction between them and the dangerous dogs.

Veterinarian spaces and food preparation areas have been refreshed, and a backup generator and additional CCTV cameras have been installed for better security.

Screwdriver-ready restoration works, which have helped drive the Canberra economy during the pandemic, have been completed at the shelter, and include upgraded paths, a new shopfront entry, improved security gates and access control to effectively manage the overall safety of staff, visitors and animals.

Each year, around 300 Canberrans make the life-changing decision to adopt an animal through Domestic Animal Services. More information on animal adoption and the Domestic Animal Services can be found at www.cityservices.act.gov.au.
