As the Canberra population grows, so do numbers of school students, and one area looking to meet this demand is Gungahlin, with the expansion of Franklin School.
In 2016, the ACT Government responded to growing community need and pledged to expand the early childhood school to become a full preschool to year 6 primary school by 2022, with a capacity for 600 students.
To support a transition to a larger school, the project will be delivered in stages. The first learning spaces will be ready in 2021, with the gymnasium/hall ready for use later in the year. The final learning communities will be ready to welcome students and staff for the start of the 2022 school year.
The $29.5 million project will feature plenty of outside learning environments and inclusive spaces for all children.
As well as providing for the educational needs of young people, schools are also important hubs for the local community and provide facilities for many local clubs and groups.
The school expansion will provide additional community facilities for the area and will include a multipurpose gym, sports courts and change-room facilities, outdoor turf sports field, outdoor multipurpose hardcourts for everyone to enjoy.
With the ACT population set to reach 500,000 by 2030, local schools, infrastructure and communities will continue to be a priority for the ACT Government.
