Major improvements are on the way for Woden Town Centre, including a new Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) campus, public transport interchange and accommodation for students who are at risk of homelessness.
The CIT campus will provide a modern, purpose-built educational facility for 6,500 students each year.
Future staff and students will enjoy a sustainable and innovative campus with smart classrooms, simulated learning environments, commercial kitchens and hands-on training spaces to help prepare students in fields such as IT, cyber security, hospitality and design.
An on-campus multi-bed “youth foyer” will also be delivered as part of the project, providing accommodation and support for young people who are committed to education and training but are at risk of homelessness.
Construction of CIT Woden will commence in 2022 on the site of the existing Woden bus interchange. The project is expected to be operational by 2025.
CIT Woden will be built alongside a new public transport interchange on Callam Street, which will integrate with a future light rail terminus. Construction of the interchange will start in 2021.
The $250-350 million project is expected to create more than 520 construction jobs, in addition to the teaching and training jobs.
