Rebates for owners of hail-damaged cars

Car with hail stones on it. The ACT Government is offering rebates for some fees and charges to help drivers get back on the road sooner.

Was your car one of the 30,000 or so vehicles in the ACT damaged by the recent hailstorm?

The ACT Government is offering rebates for some fees and charges to help drivers get back on the road sooner.

The rebates will apply to privately registered vehicles in the ACT and will be in place from late February 2020 until 30 June 2020.

There will be a stamp duty rebate of up to $100 for vehicles with a value of $10,000 or less that are purchased to replace a vehicle written-off as a result of the hailstorm.

The car value of $10,000 has been set to target those most in need.

To make sure vehicle owners don’t have to pay any additional registration fees for a replacement vehicle, we will offer refunds for registration cancellation fees ($47.70) and vehicle establishment fees (at least $48.80) for people whose vehicles are written-off by hail damage and replaced with a new or used vehicle.

We will backdate all registration cancellations, for those cancelling as a result of the hail event, to 21 January (the day after the event). Don’t worry, you won’t be paying for registration while you haven’t been able to drive your vehicle.

A higher fee of $95.70 is charged for interstate vehicles not previously registered in the ACT and this will be rebated too if you purchase a replacement vehicle interstate.

These rebates will be available from Access Canberra after the replacement vehicle has been purchased.

We will also offer a vehicle road worthy inspection fee rebate of $72.10 and an additional $55.30 if a basic identity inspection be required. This will help people whose hail damaged vehicles are not being assessed through insurance claims.

The inspections provide evidence that a vehicle is either road worthy to drive, unsafe to drive without further repairs, or a statutory write‑off.

Vehicle owners can either go to our Hume Motor Vehicle Inspection Station or to an authorised vehicle inspection station to have a road worthy inspection. Identity inspections can only be provided by the Hume Motor Vehicle Inspection station.

Our Hume Motor Vehicle Inspection Shopfront is the most appropriate place for you to go to for all your hail-affected vehicle needs.

Rebates of inspection fees and registration transfer fees will be available by application online.
