Canberra’s school cleaners are now ACT Public Service staff.

Around 300 former contract cleaners have accepted secure jobs with the ACT Government.

Many of these cleaners are migrants or refugees. Ensuring that these workers (and all others) are respected and treated fairly is part of our shared commitment to embracing and celebrating cultural diversity.

Schools including Lyneham High School have been relying on the hard work of cleaners including (from left to right) Sahlu Mebrahru Ucubatinsae, Van Phuc Le, Kiba Lhamo, Kinley Pem and Lydia Utting, pictured here with Joe Forjanic from the School Cleaning Taskforce, to ensure that facilities are ready for students each and every school day.

Having these essential workers on staff with the ACT Government means that their valuable skills and experience are more likely to remain with our all-important public education system.
