Behind the bar pouring a brew

We love our locals and that has brewed true as Canberrans support our local breweries by buying direct or choosing local at the shops during COVID-19.
Local venues are back and businesses are implementing extra measures to keep Canberrans safe.
“COVID has meant a loss of revenue as three out of our four revenue streams disappeared overnight from our tap room, keg sales and events,” says Capital Brewery Co. Partnerships, Engagement and Events Manager, Dan Watters.
“We support around 40 events every year and we were readying a fundraiser for bushfire ravaged Cobargo on the NSW south coast. It was heartbreaking to cancel that event for Cobargo as we had made a special brew from south coast ingredients and it was released the day the restrictions started.
“Yet the continued support we have received from Canberrans buying directly from us or choosing our brews at the bottle shop has, without a doubt, kept us afloat.
“We implemented a range of measures really early to keep people safe like sanitising high touch points every 15 minutes, propping the doors open so people don’t need to touch them to open and splitting our teams in two so we could quarantine if we had to and still keep production running.
“We have a strong focus on health and safety as a fully operational brewery open to the public and we will continue to adapt as restrictions are eased. We stay informed through ACT Health and have liaised directly when we have needed advice.
“We also recognised we could help directly and have been working with Underground Spirits distillery providing them with base spirit for the local production of hand sanitisers. So far, we have made 5000L of base spirit.
“There have been some real positives - we joined a national campaign called A Good Beer Always Helps where people could donate $20 that buys a 4pack of beer for an essential worker.
“With limits on patrons, we made a ‘keys to the brewery’ ticketed experience for a two-hour exclusive session in what is normally a 998-person venue. Everyone gets a fireside seat, and heaps of time with the bar staff to run them through all the beers. We've even handed over the stereo to some groups to really make it feel like their place!
“Due to the support Canberrans have shown, we have been able to keep staff employed and with the easing of restrictions, give them extra shifts thanks to people booking out sessions.
“Everyone who works for Capital Brewery Co loves Canberra. We feel lucky to live in a city that has an adventure playground for a backyard. We're stoked to be part of the fabulous independent brewing industry in Australia that right now is encouraging people to buy local.
“We are still open. We are still making local beer and we are looking forward to welcoming more Canberrans back to our venue in Dairy Road.
Canberra thanks you Capital Brewery Co. for playing your part to keep the community safe.
