Bigger, brighter LED video scoreboard for GIO Stadium
Brumbies and Raiders fans will have a bigger and brighter view of every replay at GIO Stadium this weekend following the installation of a new 19.5 metres wide by 8 metres high LED video screen.
The $2 million screen has been installed permanently at the southern end of the ground and offers a premium picture in daylight and by night, whether you are 10 metres or 200 metres away.
The screen is 150m2, weighs almost 7 tonnes and has a display life of 100,000 hours at full brightness. Its arrival will benefit fans of all major national sporting teams who play at GIO Stadium, but also patrons who attend major international fixtures and concerts.
Over 25,000 Canberrans are expected to visit GIO Stadium this weekend with the Raiders playing their season opener against the Titans at 6:00 pm on Friday (gates open at 3.30pm), and the Brumbies hosting archrivals the Waratahs at 4:05 pm on Sunday (gates open at 1:15 pm).
The Brumbies face the Reds in the women’s rugby curtain-raiser at 1:15pm.
The women players will be the first to make use of improved women’s changerooms at the stadium.
In the past, sporting facilities have been predominantly designed for male participants and typically didn’t factor in the needs of female athletes or officials.
To address this issue at Canberra’s GIO Stadium, the ACT Government dedicated $500,000 to the upgrade the change rooms and wet areas.
Additions include lockable shower cubicles, individual toilet cubicles and extra power points and shelves.
Since 2016, over $1.1 million has been allocated to upgrading 12 sporting venues across the territory to ensure they include female friendly additions.
Similar upgrades have been made to the referee changerooms to ensure they are suitable for both men and women.
If you are heading to any of the big games this weekend, or later in the season, arrive early to take advantage of Footy Early Bird Parking. Reach the ground within 45 minutes of gates opening on match days, and park for half price. That’s only $5 for parking, but remember – cash only.
