Floriade Homestead

24 November 2021

With its manicured gardens and buildings steeped in history, Lanyon Homestead has always been a popular destination.

Now the homestead has received global recognition, after it was named the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award winner for 2021.

The award celebrates the top 10 per cent of worldwide attractions that consistently deliver fantastic experiences to travellers through positive reviews and ratings over the past year. The restored 1850s homestead is also ranked the 8th best sight or landmark in Canberra on TripAdvisor, renowned for its impeccable gardens, Convict-era outbuildings and picturesque scenery.

Director of ACT Historic Places Anna Wong says the award was a wonderful surprise after a tough year.

“Being named a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award winner was such a positive boost for the ACT Historic Places team and reflected the wonderful work they do conserving Lanyon Homestead, and the excellent customer service provided by the Visitor Services Team to ensure that our visitors have the best possible experience,” Anna said.

Anna says the homestead was “disappointed” to have to cancel their Floriade display in spring due to Canberra’s lockdown, but business has been booming since they reopened.

“After months of lockdown, everyone has been eager to catch up with family and friends and the café and gardens at Lanyon have been buzzing with visitors since we re-opened,” Anna said.

“We have also dressed Lanyon Homestead, Calthorpes’ House and Mugga Mugga Cottage for Christmas from our collection. Christmas trees, decorations, Christmas cards, jellies and cake - the properties look amazing.”

The homestead has plenty of activities planned during the summer.

“Our Wellbeing Workshop series for 2022 will start in February, and will include photography, pottery, bush tucker and art workshops,” Anna said.

“The Harvest Day Out Festival will also return as part of the ACT Heritage Festival. Our 2021 series was all sold out – so book early. We are also starting ghost tours next year, which will be great fun.”
