The Cook Grocer’s Daniel Raad is going above and beyond to minimise the waste produced by plastic milk bottles.

Belconnen business The Cook Grocer is serious about sustainability.

The small supermarket has recently installed a milk bar – a reusable milk bottle filling station – to encourage customers to think twice about the waste produced from single-use plastic milk bottles.

Using The Udder Way reusable milk kegs, and working with Country Valley dairy, located in Picton, New South Wales, the Cook Grocer is offering fresh full cream and light milk to its customers.

Fresh milk kegs are delivered weekly, directly from Country Valley dairy and refrigerated under the milk taps. Customers can then self-serve from the filling station using their own glass bottles or purchase a glass bottle to use and re-use.

“Milk is one of our staple products sold in-store, so it was a no brainer and we saw its potentially locally,” Daniel Raad from the Cook Grocer said.

“The milk bar has been received incredibly well and we have seen a significant reduction in milk bottle waste. Our customers have really embraced it are thrilled that we have taken the initiative to reduce single use plastic waste even further.”

This is just one example of Canberra businesses taking further measures to minimise waste and reduce single-use plastics.

Earlier this year further single-use plastics, including plastic straws and cotton buds with plastic sticks, were phased out under the ACT’s single-use plastics ban.

The ACT Government is now proposing to expand the ban from 1 July 2023 to include single-use takeaway containers, plastic plates and bowls, expanded polystyrene products and packaging, as well as plastic microbeads in rinse-off personal care and cleaning products.

Information about the ACT’s single-use plastic ban can be found on the City Services website.
