Commentary
Since 1996, there has been a downward trend in the average number of cigarettes smoked per week by secondary students surveyed who reported smoking on at least one day in the last week ('current smoker'). In 2017, the average number of cigarettes smoked per week by 'current smokers' was 13.8. This was significantly lower than the 1996 average of 30.6 cigarettes, the 1999 average of 28.5 cigarettes and the 2002 average of 28.6 cigarettes smoked per week by 'current smokers'.
Please note that this indicator was updated in 2022 and replaces all previous versions. In addition, students who reported smoking >40 cigarettes on any of the days in the last seven days were excluded from analysis.
For the purpose of reporting the Australian Secondary Students' Alcohol and Drug survey data on HealthStats, if the 95% confidence intervals of the estimates do not overlap, they are considered to be significantly different.
