Commentary
Respondents to the Year 7 Health Survey were asked to report how many hours of sleep they get on a typical night, selecting from four, five, six, seven, eight, nine or 10 or more hours.
The proportion of respondents meeting the sleep guideline of 9 - 11 hours per day has significantly decreased between 2020 (41.9%) and 2021 (35.2%). In 2021, there was no significant difference between the proportions of males (38.5%) and females (34.9%) meeting the sleep guideline.
For the purpose of this analysis, respondents who reported that they typically sleep nine or 10 or more hours per night were defined as having met the sleep guideline.
Indicator is based on the 24 hour movement guidelines for children and young people aged 5-13 recommends having 9-11 hours of sleep daily.
For the purpose of reporting the Year 7 Health Survey data on HealthStats, if the 95% confidence intervals of the estimates do not overlap, they are considered to be significantly different.
Persons includes male, female, other and refused sex respondents and may not always add to the sum of male and female.
