Focus On reports give an overview of various health topics with data and statistics relevant to the ACT community.

Focus on Breast Cancer

This Focus On report gives an overview of breast cancer in the ACT, including a description of trends in incidence and
mortality from 1994 to 2014, and survival from 1983 to 2012.

This report focuses on breast cancer in women but men can also get breast cancer.

Focus on Caesarean Section

This Focus On report givers an overview of caesarean sections in the ACT.  Caesarean section rates in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Australia have risen over the past two decades. A caesarean section is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby.

Cancer is one of the greatest health burdens for the ACT population. Advances in prevention, early detection and treatment mean that more people are surviving and living longer with cancer. Focus on Cancer Survival

This Focus On report gives an overview of five-year cancer survival estimates for the ACT population for three ten-year periods: 1983–1992, 1993–2002 and 2003–2012.

Focus on Discretionary Food

Discretionary foods are foods which are not essential for our health. They are characterised by being high in saturated fat, added sugars, salt and/or alcohol. These foods contribute an excess amount of energy (kilojoules) to the diet and by displacing nutritious foods, increase the risk of consuming a nutritionally deficient diet.

Focus on Healthy Ageing

An overview of the health and wellbeing of older persons, aged 65 years and over who live in the ACT.

Focus on Healthy Weight in Childhood

Why is it important to have a healthy weight? Excess weight is a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions and cancers.

Focus on Perinatal Mortality

Perinatal mortality encompasses foetal deaths (stillbirths) and neonatal deaths that occur in the perinatal period commencing at 20 weeks (140 days) of pregnancy and ending at 28 days after birth.

Focus on Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the leading cancer among men in the ACT (2010-2014). The causes of prostate cancer are poorly understood. It is more common in older men and men with a family history of prostate cancer, but prostate cancer is not clearly linked to any preventable risk factors.

Focus on Smoking in Pregnancy

Smoking in pregnancy is the most important preventable cause of a wide range of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Smoking causes obstetric and foetal complications and there is growing evidence of serious harm extending into childhood and even adulthood.

Focus on Tobacco Use

Focus On Tobacco Use provides a snapshot of tobacco use among ACT young people aged 12-17 years. We used cross-sectional data from a triennial survey of a representative sample of Australian secondary students undertaken in the ACT between 1996 and 2017.
