Selling food at an event
Some large events can pose a higher health risk for the community and need to be regulated under the Food Act 2001. These are known as declared events and you must register your business.
You don't usually need to register for smaller events, including fundraising barbeques and school fetes.
Declared events include:
- Enlighten Night Noodle Market
- National Folk Festival
- National Multicultural Festival
Find other event declarations on the ACT Legislation Register.
If your business is already registered
You don't need to register for a declared event if your business holds a current food business registration from the Health Protection Service.
You must display a copy of your registration certificate at the event.
How to apply
You'll need to submit your application at least 14 days before the event. Registration is free.
There are two ways to apply:
- fill out the online form
- or fill out the declared event food business registration form and return it to the Health Protection Service by post, email, fax or in person.
After you apply
If your application is approved, you will receive a declared event registration certificate. You must display your certificate in your stall at all times during the event.
Food safety supervisor
All stalls at a declared event must have a food safety supervisor. A food safety supervisor must be reasonably available at the stall throughout the event to make sure all food is handled, cooked and served safely.
