An ACT Government Website

This page has information about air quality in the ACT using up-to-date, accurate data on levels of pollutants in the air.

The data is summarised into 5 colour-coded air quality categories:

  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor
  • Very poor
  • Extremely poor.

The highest air quality category amongst the pollutants at any one station becomes the air quality rating for the station.

The air quality categories are calculated on data readings averaged over:

  • 1 hour for nitrogen dioxide
  • 8 hours for carbon monoxide and ozone
  • 24 hours for particulates.

One hour PM2.5 data is also presented and categorised according to health activity guidelines established by the Environmental Health Standard Committee (enHealth).

Data readings

The data represented are averages over time, as prescribed by the NEPM standards.

This means that if there is a sudden onset weather or smoke event, for example a dust storm or bush fire, it is possible you will see smoke or dust in the air before it starts to register on these graphs.

If this happens the air quality will be assessed and a public health alert may be published.
