Reconciliation

Reconciliation is about improving relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-indigenous people.

Learn how we’re making reconciliation happen where we live and work.

Supporting reconciliation

Reconciliation will not be achieved until Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have equal and equitable access to the same opportunities as non-Indigenous people.

To support this, we make decisions with the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community about the policies, programs and services that affect them.

We are also working on the things we said we would do in the:

  • National Agreement on Closing the Gap
  • ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement.

Learn more about this in First Nations Territory relations.

The ACT Government also supports reconciliation through:

  • ACT Reconciliation Council
  • reconciliation action plans
  • Healing and Reconciliation Fund.

ACT Reconciliation Council

The ACT Reconciliation Council act as community ambassadors who encourage community conversations about reconciliation throughout the year.

Members are non-Indigenous and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

They help the ACT Government plan events for Reconciliation Day.

The Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs appoints the members every 2 years.

Healing and Reconciliation Fund

The ACT's $20 million Healing and Reconciliation Fund is supporting services and programs led by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Being First Nations-led will help to support community healing and self-determination.

Priorities for the funds include:

  • developing sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations
  • a healing and reconciliation process to be able to progress on Voice, Treaty, Truth.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and the ACT Government will support community conversations that will contribute to healing and reconciliation.
