Commentary

  • An apgar score gives a clinical indication of the babies condition shortly after birth, based on assessment of the heart rate, breathing, colour, reflex irritability and muscle tone. A score of less than 7 is an indicator of complications and compromise for the baby.
  • The percentage of live born babies in the ACT with a low Apgar (less than 7) has remained relatively stable, ranging from 1.4% to 2.3% between 2012 and 2021.
