Commentary

In 2018, 49.5% of ACT General Health Survey respondents aged 5-15 years usually watched TV or DVDs or played computer games or used the internet (including social media) for more than two hours per day.

The national physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines recommends children aged 5-17 years limit recreational screen time to no more than two hours per day.

Note: The indicator shows self-reported data collected through Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). Estimates were weighted to adjust for differences in the probability of selection among respondents and were benchmarked to the estimated residential population using the latest available Australian Bureau of Statistics population estimates.

Responses for children aged 5-15 years are provided by the child's main carer.

Screen time was calculated by adding school week hours and minutes and weekend hours and minutes usually watching TV, videos or DVDs, playing electronic or computer games, surfing the net or using social networking sites. If there was no TV or computer in the home, the total screen time was coded to zero.
