Commentary
- Infant mortality (i.e. deaths under one year of age) is commonly viewed as an important indicator of the general health and wellbeing of a population and has a large influence on life expectancy at birth. A high infant mortality rate lowers life expectancy, while a low infant mortality rate contributes to increased life expectancy (ABS 2010).
- The infant mortality rate for ACT babies fluctuated over the period 2009 to 2021 at between 0.9 and 3.8 per 1,000 live births. Fluctuations in the infant mortality rate occur due to the very small number of infant deaths in the ACT each year.
