Commentary
- Life expectancy continues to be high in the ACT and is expected to increase slightly over the next 10 years
- Of the Australian state and Territories in 2017-19, the ACT recorded the highest life expectancy at birth for females (85.6). Life expectancy for ACT males was 81.6 years. This was the second highest figure for males behind Victoria (81.8 years).
- Life expectancy (life tables) are based on death rates over a particular period of time. Mortality rates used in the Australian and state and territory life tables are based on the occurrence of deaths in a three-year period and the estimated resident population at the mid-point of that period. The life tables do not take into account future assumed improvements in mortality.
