Teachers and students at Belconnen’s Kingsford Smith School are making the most of the ACT’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).

The school’s Lion Dancing group has purchased two new costumes thanks to fund’s raised through the scheme.

Using the raised funds, the school has also installed its own playground weather station and display which has been used to teach weather observations.

Science teacher Timothy Kirsopp has spearheaded the school’s CDS fundraising initiatives, realising how valuable eligible empty containers can be.

“The CDS initiative was started at the end of term one last year,” Timothy said.

“We received six purple bins from Return-It, and we were able to strategically place them around the playground.”

Through returning eligible containers, including the popular school items of poppers and juice boxes, the school has raised $2,000.

“We do our container drop offs twice a term and each run returns around $200.”

Tim has also created a website showing graphs of the amount and the types of containers collected, as well as the amount of funds raised from each collection.

More than $21 million in refunds has been delivered to Canberrans since the scheme began in 2018.
