2023-24 budget snapshot – Belconnen:

  • Lake Ginninderra Circuit Path upgrades
  • Planning for a new health centre
  • Public school infrastructure improvements, including Fraser Primary
  • Hawker fields and netball facilities upgrades

With the ACT the fastest growing jurisdiction in Australia, the 2023-24 ACT Budget is investing in the infrastructure this growing city needs now and into the future. Through this year’s budget, the ACT Government is investing in the Territory's public healthcare system, improving housing choice, access and affordability and supporting cost of living pressures.

Some of the projects funded in Belconnen include:

Lake Ginninderra Circuit Path

New path connections, wider paths, improved drainage and improvement of amenities such as lighting and seating will be undertaken around Lake Ginninderra, with the first stage of works to be delivered near Emu Bank.

Additional path improvements will be delivered throughout Belconnen, with new funding for the community path network aimed at improving safety.

Three pedestrian crossings will also be installed near Canberra High School in Macquarie.

Planning for a new health centre

The ACT Government is investing more than $16 million to commence the roll out of four health centres across Canberra, with one of the facilities earmarked for West Belconnen.

Building on the popularity of Canberra Health Services at Molonglo, the new health centres will provide even more health services closer to home for the Canberra community.

Public school infrastructure

Fraser Primary School has received funding to plan for its modernisation, forming part of the current $800 million infrastructure pipeline for new and upgraded public schools. Ultimately future work is planned so Fraser Primary School can continue to cater to the needs of students and staff well into the future.

Latham Primary School will also benefit from roofing upgrades as part of a broader package of maintenance across ACT public schools.

The budget also includes funding to support infrastructure upgrades at northside specialist schools.

Sporting facility upgrades

The Belconnen Netball Association courts in Charnwood will also be upgraded. This work includes court resurfacing and work to prevent future water damage and surface cracking.

Night‑time training and match play will be made easier at the Hawker District Playing Fields with new and upgraded LED lighting. More parking and new toilets will also be installed.

The government will continue to work with Basketball ACT to support the expansion of, and upgrades to, the Belconnen Basketball Stadium.

Sustainable Household Scheme

Belconnen residents will also be able to take advantage of the additional $80 million of funding provided to the highly successful Sustainable Household Scheme.

The Scheme has already seen almost 3300 Belconnen households access zero interest loans up to $15,000 across solar, heating and cooling, hot water heat pumps, stove tops and electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, battery storage systems, and ceiling insulation.

In this next phase eligibility for solar panels under the Scheme will be rolled back and restricted to homeowners who most need government support.

Active streets and school safety

Students and parents in Canberra will benefit from a $2.4 million investment in supporting infrastructure to make the road and path network around schools safer and easier to get around.

A package of designs is currently being finalised but will include three new pedestrian crossings near Canberra High School in Macquarie.

More mowing services

Extra resources were allocated in 2022-23 to pilot a rapid response mowing team of 10 people and eight additional mowers to increase mowing capacity.

Additional funding will continue this program in 2023-24 to provide more mowing capacity to respond to weather conditions and mowing requests from the community.
