Canberra Hospital Expansion’s prototype shed provides the first glimpse of spaces within the new Critical Services Building.

A prototype shed that has been built as part of the Canberra Hospital Expansion project has provided the first glimpse of spaces within the new Critical Services Building.
The space includes mock rooms and clinical spaces including an operating theatre, ICU bay, resuscitation bay, equipment zones, and staff stations.
It also provides a preview of the materials and finishes of the new Critical Services Building. The shed allows the spaces to be tested and refined, giving healthcare staff the ability to provide feedback to make the new facility the best it can be.
Canberra Hospital Expansion’s Consumer Reference Group has played a vital role providing input into the design process, ensuring a more comfortable experience for not only consumers but carers and loved ones when they visit the new Critical Services Building.
The Consumer Reference Group was established to ensure the voices of patients, carers and families were heard. Some of the design elements influenced by the group include:
- Better patient rooms
The inclusion of carer zones and beds, dimmable lighting, and dedicated consumer power points in practical places. - New family spaces
A private family respite lounge (with kitchenette, meeting room and showers), and a patient and carer lounge. - New Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lounge
A first for Canberra Hospital with outdoor space and yarning circle. - Improved accessibility
Accessible design in-patient room ensuites, service counters at wheelchair level, and intuitive wayfinding and signage. - Emergency Department improvements
A new reception centre for better patient flows, an improved patient experience with a kid’s play zones and a sensory room. - Other amenities
Outdoor gardens, improved public spaces and personal storage.
