A huge amount of work is taking place both on site and behind the scenes of the new East Gungahlin High School, scheduled to open in 2024.

The school’s principal, Rebecca Pearce, is very much involved and looking forward to the challenge of building up the Kenny school from scratch.

Rebecca has worked in education for two decades, including 10 years at Belconnen High School, most recently as principal.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to grow the school alongside the growth of the community,” she said.

“The East Gungahlin area and the suburb of Kenny will see significant growth in families and business in the coming years and I envisage the new East Gungahlin High School as a significant part of that growth and am excited students, families and the broader community will directly influence the positive culture and success of the school.”

There’s a great deal to consider when shaping a new school.

“Firstly, you need an open mind and willingness to engage with a range of stakeholders to deeply understand what the community values in their local school,” Rebecca said.

“I have connected with my colleagues in the local schools to develop partnerships to best support students as they transition into high school. I look forward to community information sessions where I can speak directly with interested members of the community to share my vision for the school and learn from their understandings.

“I am also focused on recruitment of passionate educators and support staff to develop an expert team to support the academic and wellbeing growth of all students.

“Alongside this work, I am taking every opportunity to get onsite and explore the building as it is constructed. The contemporary design and high-quality facilities inspire me with each visit, and I can’t wait to share the space with the community,” she said.

Rebecca’s vision for the school is a place where all feel welcome and connected.

“I believe that high-quality teaching paired with a student’s sense of belonging are the main drivers of successful learning outcomes,” she said.

East Gungahlin High School will cater for 800 students from years 7 to 10.

It will provide high-quality general and specialist learning environments incorporating both indoor and outdoor learning areas as well as integrated spaces to support students with specialised needs.

Facilities available for community use outside of school hours include a multipurpose hall, a double gymnasium with basketball, netball, futsal and volleyball markings, covered hard courts suitable for basketball and netball, as well as a soccer/rugby oval.

A name for the high school in East Gungahlin will be announced later in the year.
