Work is progressing on the new primary school in Whitlam, which will open for term one, 2027.

The design will include flexible spaces to foster student development and learning.

The school will open in a staged approach and will provide the growing number of Molonglo Valley families with high-quality education close to home.

Once completed, it will cater for up to 780 primary school students from preschool to Year 6.

Enrolments for all year levels are open now.

Whitlam School features

Once completed, the school will feature:

• general and specialist learning spaces, with indoor and outdoor areas
• integrated spaces that support students with diverse learning needs
• a double gymnasium
• covered and uncovered hard courts for basketball and netball
• a playing field and outdoor play equipment.

Many of these facilities will be available for community use after school hours.

Whitlam School location

The school is located centrally within Whitlam. It is bounded by Sculthorpe Avenue, Alice Moyle Way, Hazel Hawke Avenue and Pixie O'Harris Street.

This offers easy access for students and families.

Early Childhood Education and Care Centre

A future stage will deliver an Early Childhood Education and Care Centre.

Planning for this stage is underway.

The community is invited to have their say on the school’s logo design options.

Each design carries its own unique meaning and will add special significance to the school.

Principal Lifterson does the heavy lifting

Since January 2026, the Whitlam School site has featured a 31-metre-tall crane dubbed Principal Lifterson.

It has been a star of the Whitlam skyline, helping bring the new primary school to life one lift at a time.

To mark the crane's decomissioning, a special farewell ceremony was held with project team members and Flynn, the student who won the ‘name the crane’ competition at the start of the year.

Over its time on site, Principal Lifterson logged 61 hours of hoisting time and lifted 274 tonnes of steel to help build the school's future learning spaces.

Principal Lifterson's hard work will be part of the school for years to come.
