Acton Waterfront project wins ACT construction awards

City Renewal Authority / 05 Jun 2023

The new boardwalk and land reclamation at Acton Waterfront have been recognised for construction excellence at the 2023 Civil Contractors Federation ACT Earth Awards.

The teams behind the project – the City Renewal Authority, Chincivil and Indesco – have taken out the ‘Project value $30-75 million’ and ‘Project of the year’ categories for their ongoing transformation of lakefront into a major Canberra destination.

The Authority’s CEO Malcolm Snow said the awards are a testament to the size and scope of the Acton Waterfront project, which has reclaimed part of Lake Burley Griffin’s West Basin.

“The Acton Waterfront project is creating a new city neighbourhood and public park that will be enjoyed for generations to come,” Mr Snow said.

“This award recognises the expert delivery of this significant engineering and construction feat, which has – quite literally – laid the foundations for the new boardwalk and future park.

“Chincivil and Indesco have gone above and beyond for the Canberra community to deliver the boardwalk extension swiftly despite supply chain disruptions and labour shortages in 2021-22.

“I look forward to seeing this precinct become a bustling meeting place for locals and visitors in the coming years, providing opportunities for new homes, restaurants, tourism and recreation.”

The City Renewal Authority project has been delivered by Chincivil and their design partner Indesco, two local companies committed to delivering a world-class project.

Chincivil Senior Project Manager Matt Houghton said his team was thrilled to win the awards for the large and complex project.

“We are extremely proud of our work in delivering this stage of the Acton Waterfront project,” Mr Houghton said.

“Reclaiming almost three hectares of Lake Burley Griffin has involved complex technical challenges – from working over water to importing and placing 150,000 tonnes of fill materials into the lake.”

Indesco Managing Director Angus Gorman said the award was “a testament to the way the teams worked together to deliver innovative solutions.”

“It is now great to see the boardwalk become part of everyday Canberra life.”

The next stage of the project will see National Capital Authority consultation over the designs of the in mid-2023 before construction begins.

The Acton Waterfront project will be judged in the national CCF Earth Awards later in the year.
