The next phase in the development of Ngamawari–the 30,000sqm public park coming to the Acton Waterfront–is set to begin, with the construction contract awarded to Complex Co.
This marks a major milestone in the transformation of the Acton Waterfront into an exciting, inclusive and culturally significant destination for all Canberrans.
Since May 2025, it has been wonderful to observe so many people enjoying the interim park and its open green space, minor amenities and lakeside views. It has provided a valuable public space while the land settled following earlier works.
Now, with the land stabilised and the construction contract awarded, fences will return in the new year as preparations begin for the delivery of the permanent park. Construction is scheduled to recommence in the first half of 2026.

Ngamawari has been co-designed with Ngunnawal community members and creatives to ensure it reflects and respects the cultural connection of the Ngunnawal people to this land.
When complete, the park will include:
The park will also include open lawns and gathering spaces, making it a flexible venue for community events, performances and quiet reflection.
Ngamawari (pronounced nar-mar-wa-ree) means ‘cave place’ in Ngunnawal language. The name honours the limestone caves beneath Lake Burley Griffin and the enduring connection of the Ngunnawal people to this land.
The park’s design is steeped in Ngunnawal culture and history. From native plantings that reflect traditional knowledge to artworks that share stories passed down through generations, Ngamawari will be a place of learning, connection and celebration.
This co-design approach ensures that the park is not only a beautiful and functional public space, but also a meaningful one where visitors can engage with the stories, values, and traditions of the Ngunnawal people.

With the construction contract now awarded, City Renewal is working closely with Complex Co to prepare for the next phase of works.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with the park expected to be completed by 2028, forming park of a broader vision for a new city neighbourhood along the lake’s edge.
