La Fiesta 2024: A spectacular celebration of Latin American culture

City Renewal Authority / 14 Nov 2024

About 5000 people gathered in City West on Saturday, 9 November 2024 to celebrate Latin American music, art and culture at the second annual Latin American festival, La Fiesta.

The event saw thousands of Canberrans making new connections and memories at Latin American Plaza, creating an exciting atmosphere at what would otherwise be a quiet time in City West.

It’s an example of how there is always something unique and exciting going on in the City Centre, with City Renewal’s rolling events program focussed on bringing people together and helping them discover Canberra’s largest variety of local bars, restaurants, cafes and shops in one place.

Acting Executive Branch Manager Teresa Comacchio expressed her delight at the event’s success.

“La Fiesta 2024 exceeded our expectations, drawing another large crowd this year. It was wonderful to see people of all ages revelling in the atmosphere and enjoying the rich tapestry of Latin American culture right here in the City Centre,” Ms Comacchio said.

“The event transformed Latin American Plaza into a sea of people dancing, singing, and having a good time.”

Diverse performances

The festival featured an expanded footprint to accommodate the exciting program of live music, dance performances, art displays, and authentic Latin cuisine vendors. Attendees were treated to a diverse line up of performances, including a 10-piece Chilean cumbia big band, a Brazilian folk group from Melbourne, salsa kings from Sydney, and local ska and reggae legends.

Event programmer Rafael Florez from Clandestino events highlighted the festival’s exciting atmosphere.

“The vibe from the very start was amazing, with people of all ages enjoying the music, dancing and soaking up the great sounds and culture," Mr Florez said.

"As the night went on, bands and dancers upped the energy and looking around I felt that the community had come together in the moment to celebrate and participate in this Latin American cultural experience."

The open-air gallery was a standout feature of the event again this year, showcasing traditional and contemporary artworks from local Latin embassies.

This year’s theme, ‘How your country celebrates,’ offered unique insights into cultural traditions from across Latin America.

City Renewal thanks the local artists, embassies, and community groups who helped make the event happen.

“We are grateful for the support and contributions from everyone involved. La Fiesta truly embodies the spirit of community and cultural celebration,” Ms. Comacchio said.

The event is part of City Renewal’s broader Place Experience and Marketing program, which benefits local businesses and is supported by commercial ratepayers via the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy.
