Meet Sweeping Beauty: Canberra’s first electric street sweeper

The new electric sweeper purchased by the ACT Government's City Renewal Authority

The City Renewal Authority has purchased a new electric street sweeper and scrubber as part of our commitment to a cleaner and greener City Centre.

The quiet and zero-emission sweeper – which our team on the ground calls Sweeping Beauty – is already performing multiple functions throughout the City Centre, Braddon and Dickson.

The machine picks up leaf litter and scrubs footpaths and other paved areas.

City Renewal Authority Place Experience Manager Jen Ramsay said the sweeper is making the City Centre a better place for locals and visitors.

“Sweeping Beauty is good for the environment, good for local business and good for the community,” Ms Ramsay said.

“In creating tidy and attractive spaces, the electric sweeper will continue to make the City Centre a place people want to keep coming back to – driving economic activity in the process.

“It highlights our focus on creating a sustainable City Centre while also achieving positive outcomes for community and business – it’s a win-win.”

The electric sweeper is operated by the City Renewal Authority’s Place Team.

Given the electric sweeper is quieter than traditional models, the team can now start work earlier and clean more of the City Centre before most people start their day.

The team trialled an electric sweeper and scrubber – this one named Optimus Grime 2.0 – earlier in 2023 and were very happy with how it performed its various function.

It charges in about three hours, runs for nine hours and can pick up around 800 kilos of leaves, debris and waste from our paths and gutters.

The electric sweeper was partly-funded by the City Centre Marketing Improvements Levy (CCMIL). This is a contribution made by commercial building owners through the City Centre and parts of Braddon to support the area’s cleanliness, sustainability, and economic activity.
