New pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths and more plants are coming to parts of Lonsdale Street, with construction on the City Renewal Authority project starting today.
The Authority’s Deputy CEO Craig Gillman says the works are part of a Braddon streetscapes project to make the area safer, easy to access and more enticing to visitors.
“This project will build on what people know and love about Braddon,” Mr Gillman said.
“From landscaping and street furniture to better pram and wheelchair access, the upgrades will encourage more people to enjoy Braddon’s retail shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants.
“It’s about enhancing Braddon as an eclectic, creative and inclusive hub in the city for the years to come.”
Mr Gillman said local construction company Guideline ACT will deliver the project in stages to minimise disruption.

“Works will begin at southern end of Lonsdale Street, where we are adding new lighting, plants, paving and a centre median,” Mr Gillman said.
“This staged process will support local retailers and make sure Braddon stays open for business throughout construction.”
Lonsdale Street upgrades include:
New landscape elements will be installed at these locations, including new paving, plantings, lighting, street furniture, new bike racks and bins.

The Braddon streetscapes project will also improve pedestrian safety and access at the Mort and Elouera and Street intersection. The community will be asked for feedback on proposed intersection upgrades in mid-2023.
