ACT Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

We give advice to the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT.

What we do

We work across the ACT Government to organise a shared approach to issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans.

We share government services, programs and events with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

We also support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councils and elected representatives. This includes funding for the United Ngunnawal Elders Council meetings.

Strategies and action plans

Advisory councils and reference groups

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body: listens to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans and represents their ideas and concerns to the ACT Government. It is a member of the Coalition of Peaks, which means it has a national responsibility to help shape Closing the Gap.
  • ACT Reconciliation Council : promotes reconciliation across Canberra and encourages community conversations about the importance of reconciliation throughout the year.
  • United Ngunnawal Elders Council: gives advice to the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body and the ACT Government about heritage and connection to land for the Ngunnawal people.
