Shipping containers are being repurposed as canteens and change rooms for sporting clubs across the ACT.

01 May 2023

The ACT Government’s first solar powered shipping container canteen has been turned on for players and spectators of Australian Rules football at the Gordon district playing fields.

Equipped with six solar panels and a battery, it generates 2.2 kilowatts of power to operate air conditioning, a fridge and lighting to provide approximately 12 hours of run time.

Gordon district playing fields recently had its pavilion damaged by fire and vandalism. The shipping container creates a dedicated temporary facility for users of the playing fields.

Two other similar temporary facilities have recently been introduced to ACT Government sportsgrounds as solar powered change rooms. In February 2023 a solar powered shipping container change room was installed for players at Gordon and last week the Hall Bushrangers Rugby Union team benefited with a container installed at Hall sportsground.

The ACT Government will continue to invest in similar solar powered shipping containers which can be placed at other grounds where required.
