Not what you wanted? Understand your entitlements on returns or refunds and avoid scams.
12 December 2024
Over the holiday period, many people return unwanted or unsuitable gifts to the store.
While businesses are not legally obligated to provide a refund or exchange for change of mind purchases, many businesses offer flexible returns policies over the holiday period. It is important to check returns policies before purchasing a gift.
Consumers are entitled to refunds if an item is faulty.
When purchasing from a business based outside Australia, you may experience practical difficulties in obtaining a remedy if something goes wrong with the purchase or you need an exchange or refund.
Gift cards across Australia are regulated to have a three-year expiry date however it is still important to check the terms and conditions of a gift card before purchasing. For more information on gift cards please visit the Access Canberra website.
When purchasing a product or service online, follow these tips to protect yourself:
- Read the terms and conditions of your purchase carefully and understand any cancellation or change fees before you pay;
- Screenshot or save any documents, receipts, or confirmation emails;
- Always check that you’re on a secure website before making a payment;
- Make sure the website you visit to make transactions has the correct web address in the address bar;
- Be on the lookout for online shopping scams such as scammers pretending to be legitimate online sellers, either with a fake website that looks legitimate, or a fake ad on a genuine retailer site.
