This round of construction marks the last stage of nbn’s fibre upgrade program in the ACT.

In brief

  • Construction work has begun on nbn upgrades for about 97,000 ACT homes and businesses.
  • Almost all (99 per cent) of these homes and businesses will then be able to upgrade to nbn full Fibre to the Premises.
  • Once complete, about 94 per cent of homes and businesses in the ACT will be able to access nbn’s highest residential speed.

Construction has begun on nbn upgrades for about 97,000 homes and businesses in the ACT.

These premises are currently served by Fibre to the Node (FTTN). Once complete, it is expected that about 99 per cent of these homes and businesses will have the option to upgrade to multi-gig nbn full Fibre to the Premises. Full fibre is faster and more reliable than FTTN.

The remaining homes and business will need further design work to confirm the appropriate upgrade path.

This construction marks the last stage of nbn’s fibre upgrade program in the ACT. Once complete, about 94 per cent of homes and businesses in the ACT will be able to access nbn’s highest residential speeds.

Most premises will be connected to full fibre using the new underground pathways, while some areas will be upgraded using existing aerial pathways (power poles).

Expansive new underground fibre infrastructure will be installed in road reserves, public spaces and private property across Canberra. The ACT Government will work closely with nbn to minimise disruptions during construction.

There are now more than 100,000 premises in the ACT that have access to nbn full fibre.

The latest construction will mean more residents will have access to nbn full fibre across:

  • Belconnen
  • Tuggeranong
  • North Canberra
  • Woden Valley
  • Weston Creek
  • South Canberra.

You can check the status of your address and find out more about the upgrades on the nbn website.

The upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2030.
