There are lots of good reasons to holiday at home this April.
31 March 2026
In brief:
- With higher fuel prices, some Canberrans may choose to stay home on weekends and holidays.
- There are lots of things to see and do in the ACT.
- If you are travelling, make sure to check the fuel situation where you're going.
Will you be staying local on more weekends and holidays due to the increase in fuel prices?
Fuel is continuing to arrive in the ACT as expected and there is enough fuel for normal use.
Prices are higher because of global events, not because we are running out of fuel locally.
With high fuel prices, Canberrans may choose to reduce fuel use where it makes sense for them.
This could include:
- using public or active transport
- combining trips
- car sharing or driving more efficiently.
During the school holidays, some Canberrans may find it helpful to use existing flexible work arrangements where roles allow. This short‑term flexibility can help families manage care arrangements and ease fuel costs.
Just as importantly, Canberra’s cafés, shops and local businesses are open and your support makes a real difference.
Keep using local businesses and spend time enjoying the city centre, town centres and local shops.

What to consider if you are travelling
When traveling away from home for weekends or holidays, make sure to prepare and check the fuel situation where you're going.
FuelCheck is an online tool that gives real-time information about fuel prices at service stations across the ACT and NSW.
You can:
- find current fuel prices in the ACT and NSW
- search for fuel by type (for example standard unleaded, premium unleaded, diesel) or brand
- get notified when prices are dropping at your regular stations.
Download the FuelCheck app at the App Store or on Google Play.
Also, it is highly recommended to fill up when possible rather than waiting for your tank to be near empty. Keep updated on local fuel supply especially if travelling through regional areas.
By being considerate of others and planning ahead, we can all help make sure everyone reaches their destination and returns home safely.
