City Centre and Braddon businesses are invited to apply for grants of up to $1,000 to support multicultural-themed activations that enhance the 2026 National Multicultural Festival experience.
The grant program encourages businesses to bring their shopfronts, menus and spaces to life with creative initiatives that celebrate Canberra’s cultural diversity. Think pop-up performances, cooking demonstrations, cultural art installations, themed menus, or interactive displays that invite the public to engage, learn and connect.
“We want to see the city buzzing with colour, music, flavour and culture,” said Teresa Comacchio, Acting Executive Branch Manager of Place Experience and Marketing. “We’re inviting businesses to get creative, get involved, and help shape a city experience that reflects the richness of our community.”
The grants are designed to be simple and accessible. Eligible businesses within the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy (CCMIL) area can apply for the grants, with 100% of funds paid upfront and no formal agreement required beyond the application and email exchange. Activations must run during the festival period and be listed on the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse.
“Whether it’s a dance performance in your foyer, a dish inspired by your heritage, or a window display that tells a cultural story – this is your chance to be part of the National Multicultural Festival,” Teresa said. “Your activation will also be promoted through festival channels, helping you reaching thousands of festival-goers.”
The program is a collaboration between the City Renewal Authority and the National Multicultural Festival team, and forms part of a broader strategy to support local businesses during a period of change and construction in the City Centre. It complements other initiatives like the business activation grants targeted to businesses impacted by the construction of light rail to Commonwealth Park.
Successful applicants will be featured in festival marketing, including online listings, social media, and printed materials – offering valuable exposure and a chance to connect with new audiences.
